VPNs Like VyprVPN + Alternatives + Competitors + Similar VPN

VyprVPN is one of the best VPN services for hiding your IP address for streaming, privacy, and many more. Users can protect themselves with exclusive features and proprietary technology. Without a VPN, your IP address, location, browsing activity and online communication are at risk. The list of those who would want to get hands on your browsing information can be pretty long, and it ranges from persons in the dark abodes of cyber fraud, to agents in the hallowed chambers of censors’ board and law enforcement agencies.

VPN gives you online privacy and security, ensuring that what you do online can only be known by those to whom you choose to share the information.

VyprVPN boldly state on their website that they are “the world’s most powerful VPN”, the claim to being the most powerful VPN or the best VPN is made my almost every VPN on the market. But there can be only one most powerful, or one best. This review aims to examine vyprVPN and determine the extent to which what they have on offer go in supporting the claim of being the most powerful VPN.

VyprVPN offers beautiful, easy-to-use apps for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, and routers (all the major platforms are covered by vyprVPN). However, they do not currently support devices that run on Linux. The VyprVPN app offers a lot of easy-to-configure automatic features, something you’d expect from a premium VPN provider. VyprVPN allows P2P traffic torrenting, as well as unlimited bandwidth and unlimited server switching, so that you can have the freedom to access the internet anytime and anyday.

VyprVPN is one VPN that have a kill switch. The VyprVPN kill switch ensures you never connect to the internet without the VPN’s protection by automatically blocking your internet connection whenever the VPN is disconnected. VyprVPN easy-to-use kill switch feature can also be customized based on your security preferences.

Connecting to the fast servers is also made easy with VyprVPN. All you need to do is open the vyprVPN app and tap on the location icon. Once you see the server list, a ping test will run, the result will be a display of the ping times, and you can choose the servers with the lowest ping times as they are the fastest servers.

There is also a feature (the ‘connect to fastest server’ button) that can automatically connects you to the fastest server on the vyprVPN network. With this provision, you do not have to manually run the ping test to select and connect to the fastest server; all you need do is click the ‘connect to fastest server’ button and vyprVPN will automatically determine the fastest server and connect.

This feature will be invaluable at times when top speed is your priority, and you are not particular about the specific location of the server you are connecting to.

With VyprVPN, the number of devices that you can connect to the VyprVPN network under one license depends on the type of plan that you subscribe to (3 simultaneous connections are allowed in the basic plan, and 5 simultaneous connections are allowed in the premium plan). VyprVPN is one of the top VPN services, but if you are not satisfied with privacy and security features, you may try out other alternatives that strongly compete with VyprVPN. Below are other VPN like VyprVPN:

Speed and Performance

VyprVPN offer decent speed that will give you a smooth browsing experience, but they are definitely not the fastest VPN.

Verdict:

Surfshark VPN offers you the best balance of low pricing as well as unlimited devices. NordVPN is known as a strong overall choice for performance as well as security, while Proton VPN is attractive for privacy-conscious users and also for anyone that needs a free plan. CyberGhost, PureVPN, PIA and IPVanish provide you with some of the lowest long-term introductory prices. Which ever one you choose will be great for your online security. You may visit each of them to know more before subscribing.

VPN generally slows internet speed, so the best VPN are those whose activity will almost match the no VPN speed levels. VyprVPN does a very good with uploads speed, there was a slight almost-insignificant drop from the no VPN level; and this upload speed performance is as good as a PVN can give. On the download side, VyprVPN showed significant but tolerable speed drops. The download speed performance was fast enough browsing and even streaming high definition videos; you will only come stuck if you are torrenting.

ISP and streaming services can monitor your activity and throttle your internet connection; but with a fast VPN your traffic is encrypted, and your ISP cannot slow you down based on what you are doing.

Security and Privacy

VPN Protocol:

The three major VPN protocols (OpenVPN, PPTP and L2TP) offered by all the top VPNs are also offered by vyprVPN. The openVPN is always recommended because it not only has excellent impossible-to-crack encryption (256 AES encryption), but it offers an optimal balance of ‘securing your privacy’ and speed.

Proprietary Technology:

In addition to the major protocols, VyprVPN owners (Golden Frog) have developed a new VPN technology called Chameleon. They explain that “Chameleon scrambles openVPN packet metadata to ensure it is not recognizable via deep packet inspection (DPI), while still keeping it light and fast”.

There are concerns about VPN protocols being inspected, throttled and blocked by governments, corporations and ISPs via DPI. Chinese firewall has been known to identify and throttle encrypted communication by recognizing packet data on the much heralded openVPN. The Chameleon technology, which is exclusive to vyprVPN and is arguably their best feature mask VPN traffic so that it cannot be identified as such. The encryption of the Chameleon technology gives really strong privacy and is especially invaluable to users in countries where internet connection is restricted or blocked.

Unsurprisingly, my survey of VPN users’ feedback about the Chameleon technology, have seen a lot of favorable comments pouring out of China. The only drawback is that Chameleon is only available in the vyprVPN premium package that is steeply priced.

VyprVPN has also launched a new feature called VyprVPN Cloud. Formerly the VyprVPN server, the VyprVPN Cloud creates an easy-to-use highly secure VPN server deployment solution eliminating the frustrations traditionally associated with configuring VPNs. The VyprVPN cloud adds another layer of security when accessing public or private cloud servers.

Jurisdiction:

The jurisdiction of vyprVPN makes them appealing to a lot of users. VPN users are generally turned off by VPNs domiciled in countries with strict anti-privacy laws such as the US and the UK. VyprVPN is based in Switzerland – a country that has a long history of respecting privacy. For example the Federal Supreme court of Switzerland ruled in 2010 that IP addresses are personal information, and under Swiss privacy laws they may not be used to track internet usage without the knowledge of the individuals involved.

Switzerland has also established a legal framework to protect privacy. The Swiss Federal Data Protection Act (DPA) and the Federal Data Protection Ordinance (DPO) both provide privacy protection for online users. Unlike the data protection legislation of many countries the DPA protect both personal data pertaining to natural persons and legal entities.

To put all this into context, consider the current situation in the US. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) broadband privacy laws which would have prevented ISPs from sharing individual browser histories with third parties without consent have been wholly repealed, and the FCC is also barred from passing any “substantially similar” new rules to protect user privacy.

Third Party Server Services:

One good thing about vyprVPN is that they own and manage their server network. They say on their website: “Unlike our competitors, we operate 100% without third parties, own our hardware and manage our network … when using VyprVPN your privacy is protected from end-to-end”

Very few VPNs can match VyprVPN in this regard; as even several of the top rated VPNs use third parties to host their servers. Is it much of a deal? There is a story on WipeYourData about an EarthVPN user who got arrested by Dutch police after he was tracked down with the help of his connection logs.

Naturally, many suggested that the VPN may have handed user data to the police; but the VPN in their defense blamed the data center where they host the server. Really, I don’t know if I believe the PVN’s alleged defense, but what I do know is that it is an indictment to third party server services provided to PVNs. Not personally owning and managing your servers come with risks to data privacy; and in this regard VyprVPN makes a very good PVN to privacy-conscious users.

Logging Policy:

VyprVPN keep connection logs and they clearly explain this on their website. They maintain that the information captured in the connection log is stored on the VPN client only for diagnostic and troubleshooting purposes. Many of the top VPNs keep logs, so vyprVPN’s keeping of connection logs shouldn’t be a deal breaker. However, if you desire to attain something close to complete anonymity online, you will be better served staying clear of VPNs that keep any form of logs.

It is also important to note that the “no logs” claims of many VPNs are false. It has been found that some VPNs, even the top rated ones, while advertising “no logs’ on their website not only kept user logs but handed the logs over to third parties. Because of this fact, a lot of commentators have been impressed by what they call vyprVPN ‘logging transparency’.

Packages and Pricing

VyprVPN is different from other top VPNs in offering two plans that have different features. What we see among the top VPNs is one plan different only in duration of service, such that no-matter the VPN’s service package you buy you will enjoy the same features as another person buying any other of the VPN’s service package, the difference being only in the period of time you can access the service; but with VypprVPN we see VyprVPN premium and the basic vyprVPN, with the premium plan having certain privacy features absent in the basic plan.

Both plans have two packages; monthly subscription package and yearly subscription package with prices that breaks down as follows:

PlanMonthly subscription ($)Yearly subscription ($)
Basic VyprVPN9.9560
VyprVPN premium12.9580

The yearly package of the basic plan at $60 equates to $5 per month which is a 50.25% cost saving over the single month package. Also, the $80 yearly subscription of the premium plan equates to $6.67 per month which is a 51.50% cost saving of the single month package. Thus, like every other VPN, vyprVPN’s annual packages offer the best value. The prices also easily reveal that vyprVPN is not a cheap VPN option, and stands among the most expensive.

It is worth noting that vyprVPN does not offer the semi-annual (6 months) or quarterly (3 months) subscription that other VPNs offer. This might come as a disadvantage to them, because some users might deem the one month too short to cover their needs, but might not want the long-term commitment of the annual subscription.

They accept the regular payment options such as credit cards and Paypal. This is one disadvantage of  vyprVPN because the payment options supported can leave a trail endangering the anonymity of the user. They should, like most VPNs are starting to do, allow anonymous payment options like bitcoins and other crypto currencies.

Free Trial:

However VyprVPN beat a lot of the chasing pack by offering a 3 day free trial. While some would argue that 3 days might be too short for users to really get the feel of a VPN, consider that most VPNs, even the very top ones, do not give free trials. More often than not, users get hooked after free trials; they do not simply use your service during the trial-window, and bolt.

The best-in-class softwares are reporting that 40% – 60% of their free trials translate to purchases. There are lots of persons, and I mean a lot (you can count me among them), who would want to experience the value of a product/ service without any financial commitments; and vyprVPN easily appeal to these persons.

While many top VPNs do refunds with money back guarantees, VyprVPN do not do refunds. Well, who would expect them to, after offering a free trial? I wouldn’t.

Customer Care

Some of the most brutal customer reviews of VPNs have been directed at their support service, and for good reason. When you have issues and really need help, it would be frustrating to find out that you are left alone to yourself, or that the much needed help is late in coming.

VyprVPN has an array of customer support tools. They have the self-help tools such as the knowledge base (where you can see several articles about the basic usage of the VPN) and the community forum (where you can browse to see helpful suggestions to the questions that other users have asked in the past). However, while the knowledge base would prove very helpful, it is not as extensive as those of several of the competing VPNs.

For any who would want direct contact with vyprVPN representative, VyprVPN states on their site: “Our support staff is here 24 x 7 x 365 to provide expert, timely, high quality support”. For direct contact, they have an email service (which allows you to send in a ticket for more detailed communication) and a live chat support service (which provides you instant feedback).

A test of the support service was satisfactory; the feedback from the e-mail service was professional (really expert and high quality), and the response time was one of the fastest among the premium VPNs.

Knowing that several VPNs do not provide 24/7 support (do not have a live chat service, and have very long waiting times before getting responses with their e-mail service); vyprVPN timely support service makes them an appealing VPN.

Conclusion

VyprVPN is based in the privacy friendly locale of Switzerland. They invest heavily in VPN technology, with exclusive innovative products to show for it. VyprVPN own and personally manage its servers eliminating third parties and their associated issues. In terms of security, they have multiple protocols to choose from including the high level OpenVPN encryption protocol.

They also offer exclusive features such as vyprVPN Cloud and strong Chameleon protocol that give added layer of privacy and security. They give a 3-day free trial which gives you an opportunity to test their service free of charge. The VPN like VyprVPN listed above are also its best competitors in the VPN industry; you can use one of them as an alternative or better replacement.

Their major drawback is that they keep certain connection logs for a period of 30 days which might not appeal to very privacy-conscious VPN users. Also, they still do not accept anonymous payment options that offer users something close to complete anonymity.
